Car Insurance Without a License in California

Ready Lane Insurance Services quotes California car insurance in three situations people ask us about: you own a car but don’t have a license, you drive with a license from Mexico or another country, or you have an AB 60 license. English and Spanish. Call (619) 489-3751.

What California requires. The DMV: “Insurance (also referred to as financial responsibility) is required on all vehicles operated or parked on California roads.” The Department of Insurance: “Driving without insurance is illegal.” and “Also, you must have liability coverage to register your car.”

You Own the Car but Don’t Have a License

If someone in your home has a license and drives your car, we can quote a policy with that person listed as the driver. Some carriers will also list you as an excluded driver. The Department of Insurance explains: “Some drivers might be excluded from your policy.” “This means that the policy will not cover accidents when they are driving.”

If you’re excluded, the policy won’t cover an accident while you drive. When you get your license, call us and we’ll add you.

You Have a License From Mexico or Another Country

The DMV’s license fact sheet says: “If you are a visitor in California over 18 years old and have a valid DL from your home state or country, you may drive in this state without getting a California DL as long as your home state DL remains valid.” If you’re moving here, the DMV says: “If you intend to become a California resident and drive in California, you must apply for a California DL.”

We can quote drivers with a valid license from Mexico or another country. When you get your California license, call us, because your price can change.

You Have an AB 60 License

The DMV says: “AB 60 driver’s licenses are for individuals who are unable to provide proof of legal presence in the United States, but who meet California DMV requirements and are able to provide proof of identity and California residency.” Its handbook adds: “California offers driver’s licenses for all residents regardless of immigration status.”

We quote AB 60 license holders like any California licensed driver. The state’s Low Cost Auto program takes it too. The Department of Insurance says: “You must have a valid California driver’s license. AB 60 license is accepted.”

If you don’t have a license yet, the DMV’s AB 60 page explains how to apply.

What It Costs and How to Get a Quote

The listed driver’s record, your ZIP code, the car and the carrier set your price. We compare carriers and show you the full price before you buy.

  1. Call (619) 489-3751 or send the form.
  2. Have the car’s VIN and the license of whoever will drive it: California, AB 60 or foreign.
  3. We compare carriers, standard and non-standard, and you pick.

The DMV’s minimum liability limits: $30,000 for injury or death to one person, $60,000 for injury or death to more than one person, and $15,000 for damage to property.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get car insurance without a license in California?

If you own the car and a licensed driver in your home drives it, yes. We can quote a policy with that driver listed. Some carriers will also list you as an excluded driver, which means the policy won’t cover an accident while you drive.

Can I insure a car with a Mexican license?

Yes. We can quote drivers with a valid license from Mexico or another country. Per the DMV, a visitor over 18 can drive on a valid license from home while it stays valid, and new residents who will drive must apply for a California license.

Does an AB 60 license count for car insurance?

Yes. We quote AB 60 license holders like any California licensed driver. The Department of Insurance says the state’s Low Cost Auto program accepts AB 60 licenses too.
