Non-Owner SR-22 Insurance in California
If the DMV says you need an SR-22 and you don’t own a car, a non-owner policy can carry the filing. The DMV calls it an operator’s policy. Ready Lane Insurance Services quotes them across California in English and Spanish. Call (619) 489-3751.
The DMV’s SR 104 sheet lists three kinds of SR 22 policy: “A motor vehicle liability policy may be provided to cover only vehicles registered in your name (owner’s policy), only vehicles you do not own (operator’s policy), or all vehicles whether you own them or not (broad coverage).” It says the certificate “is acceptable for any DMV actions requiring proof of financial responsibility.”
When the DMV Asks for an SR-22
- After a DUI conviction. The DMV handbook says you “Must file a California Insurance Proof Certificate (SR 22/SR 1P).”
- After a collision without insurance. The handbook says: “Your driving privilege will be suspended for up to four years if you are in a collision and do not have proper insurance coverage.” It adds: “You can get your driver’s license back during the last three years of the suspension if you provide a California Insurance Proof Certificate (SR 22/SR 1P) and maintain it during the three-year period.”
It usually lasts three years. For a first DUI, the DMV’s DL 1046 A says: “You will be required to maintain the SR 22 for 3 years.”
Keep It Active the Whole Time
The SR 104 sheet warns: “If proof is canceled for any reason during the three-year proof requirement, your driving privilege will be suspended, effective upon notice.” And: “If you change insurance companies, be certain your new proof is on file before canceling the old policy.”
If you switch carriers with us, we line up the new SR-22 before the old policy ends.
What a Non-Owner Policy Covers
It’s liability coverage that goes with you as the driver when you drive a car you don’t own. It doesn’t pay to fix the car you’re driving. Carriers write it for drivers who don’t have a car at home they drive regularly, so we ask about that first.
The DMV’s minimum liability limits: $30,000 for injury or death to one person, $60,000 for injury or death to more than one person, and $15,000 for damage to property. Your non-owner policy carries at least these.
What It Costs and How to Get It
Your driving record, your ZIP code and the carrier set your price. We compare carriers and show you the full price, including any SR-22 filing fee, before you buy.
- Call (619) 489-3751 or send the form. Have your license number and your DMV notice ready.
- We compare carriers, standard and non-standard, and you pick.
- Once you buy, the insurance company files your SR-22 with the DMV.
If no regular carrier will write you, the DMV’s SR 104 sheet says “any insurance agent or broker” can apply for you to the California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan. Ask us.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get an SR-22 if I don’t own a car?
Yes. The DMV’s SR 104 sheet lists the operator’s policy, which covers “only vehicles you do not own,” as one of the policies an SR 22 can certify. That’s what a non-owner SR-22 is.
How much is a non-owner SR-22 in California?
It depends on your driving record, your ZIP code and the carrier. We compare carriers and show you the full price, including any SR-22 filing fee, before you buy. Call (619) 489-3751 for yours.
How long do I need to keep the SR-22?
Usually three years. For a first DUI, the DMV says: “You will be required to maintain the SR 22 for 3 years.” If your proof is canceled during that time, the DMV says your driving privilege will be suspended.
What if I buy a car later?
Call us before you drive it. Per the DMV, an operator’s policy covers only vehicles you don’t own. We move you to an owner’s or broad policy and file a new SR-22 so you have no gap.
Do you help in Spanish?
